Barbecue

this

weekend

THERE is still time to buy tickets for the Society’s annual barbecue – but only if you act now!  We need to know in advance how many to cater for.

This year’s menu includes sausages, burgers, nut veggies and chicken, new potatoes, salads and fresh bread. To be followed by fresh strawberries, cherries (if available), and a myriad of home-created gourmet desserts, including lime-cheese jelly, cherry yoghurt syllabub, chocolate orange blancmange, apple and ginger crisps, rice and honey table cream, and rhubarb and orange fool.

Tickets cost £7.50 each, with accompanied under-14s free.  All the food you can eat!

Gates open at 4.30pm and we begin serving food at 5.30pm, but don’t worry if you can’t get there until later, there will be plenty!

Please bring your own drinks and glasses. There will be some tables and chairs provided, but not enough for everyone, so if you have your own please bring them, or a picnic rug.

The D’Avanzo String Quartet will be playing two sets for us, featuring the more familiar classics.

All this in the delightful grounds of the Georgian Manor House at Hayle Place, vehicle entry from Teasaucer Hill, or walk from Postley Road.

You may drive around the front entrance of The Manor to unload chairs and supplies, but please don’t park in the circular driveway, which is for the benefit of Manor residents. Bryn and his work-party team have strimmed a parking area in a nearby field, follow the parking signs.

This event is open only to members and their personal guests. (There is a membership application on the back page, if you wish to sign up neighbours or friends.)

And our next production……

ON Tuesday, 16 September, we will be having an evening of live jazz, with singer Viv Rogers and the New Orleans Jazz Advocates. Members may have seen the band perform at Maidstone council’s jazz week festival last month.

Tickets for the show at Boughton Monchelsea Village Hall are £7 for adults, £4 children. Bring your own drinks and snacks. Seating at tables. Book on 751926.

On Saturday, 25 October, we have another evening of drama and nostalgia.

When The Lights Went Out, a production by the Fairgame Theatre Company, tells the story of life on the home-front during the Second World War.

Once again we are at Boughton Monchelsea Village Hall. Tickets are £7.50 for adults, £5 for children, which includes an interval glass of wine or juice.

On this occasion, seating will be theatre-style. (No tables)

Finally, on Saturday, 22 November, we have a foot-stomping, toe-tapping treat for you-all with Appalachian Roots presenting Fiddles and Feet – a mix of banjos, ballads and dance from North Carolina.

Appalachian Roots comprises Riley Baugus – whose singing was featured on the sound track of the movie Cold Mountain, and Ira Bernstein, the mountain men’s answer to Fred Astaire. This show is certain to attract a lot of attention from folk and country fans and we expect a sell-out, but Members can get in ahead of the good ol’ boys by ordering now. Tickets £8 and £4 for children. Bring your own Bourbon.

Loose Road Area Character Assessment

MAIDSTONE Council begins its official consultation on its draft Loose Road Area Character Assessment on August 1.

The public has until 26 September to respond to the proposals. It is important that everyone looks at the assessment, particularly with regard to the streets neighbouring them, since once adopted, this assessment will become part of the council’s supplementary planning guidance and will help to determine whether or not future planning applications in the area should be allowed.

Your Society was one of a group of local representatives who were consulted at the start of this process, but the current document is very largely the work of the planning consultants engaged by the council.

The document can be accessed via the council’s website (www.digitalmaidstone.co.uk) and paper versions are also available in the town’s libraries and at the Maidstone Borough Council’s reception at the Chequers Mall.

Text Box: There will also be a public exhibition of the proposals at Loose Infants School on Saturday 6 September
from 10 am to 1pm.

During the consultation period you will be able to comment online at http://maidstone-consult.limehouse.co.uk/portal

More cash

ONCE all the bills were in, the final tally for our quiz on June 7 was higher than previously estimated. The Society made a profit of £82.81. We should also have made it clear in the last newsletter that the donation of £50 to St Francis Church was by way of a thank-you to their quiz team for supplying us with their quiz questions.

Badgers saved

THE Government has finally seen sense and ruled out an enforced cull of badgers. The NFU were pressing for a cull in an attempt to cut cases of bovine TB, but the Environment Secretary Hilary Benn told the House of Commons that having a cull could end up making the disease worse. Instead, there will be a reinforced programme of vaccination for cattle.

Teddies wanted

YOUR Society will be running a new and second-hand teddy tombola at the Tovil Parish Fete on the Bridge Mill Way Open Space on Saturday, 23 August. Donations of teddies or any cuddly toys still in good order would be much appreciated. Contact Maggie on 01622 674001.

Loose Area History Group: The group takes a break in August and September.

Next meeting: All meetings of the Society are open to all members to attend. The next meeting of the executive committee will be on Wednesday, August 6, starting at 7.30pm at Bockingford House, Cripple Street, Maidstone. Call 751926 for directions.
